At Rare, we love pirates. So much so that we’ve managed to sneak them into many games over the years: Banjo-Tooie, Grabbed by the Ghoulies and Viva Piñata to name a few. So when in 2014 we decided to start out on a grand adventure to create a new game world that would really capture the charm and imagination of the studio, you can imagine our delight when we realised that a pirate adventure was the perfect fit.

Each of our artists embraced the challenge to create an illustrative world filled with brush marks, where every object would tell a story and be in constant motion, from the waves rolling under your ship to the large sculptural clouds forming overhead. As we explored the visuals, our art crew grew—and just like a motley bunch manning a ship of our own, each new member brought their own passion and skills on board to make our adventure more exciting by the day.

To bring a new world into existence is always a pleasure, and revealing it to the world is a delight.
